Pour mettre cela en perspective, prenons n’importe quelle année au hasard depuis 1776; il y a une chance (91 % à 93 % avec des chiffres ajustés à 2024) que les États-Unis soient impliqués dans une guerre cette année-là. Aucun président des États-Unis ne peut réellement être considéré comme un président en temps de paix. « En fait, tous les présidents successifs des États-Unis peuvent tous être considérés (présidents en guerre) ».

Les États-Unis n’ont jamais passé une décennie entière sans être en guerre. La seule fois où les États-Unis sont restés cinq ans sans entrer en guerre (1935-1940), c’était pendant la période isolationniste de la Grande Dépression.

Dans la grande majorité de ces guerres, les États-Unis étaient à l’offensive.
