Toussaint Louverture est né esclave (1743-1803) sur l’habitation Bréda au Haut du Cap français dans la partie française de Saint-Domingue (aujourd’hui République d’Haïti) : dans ce domaine, propriété du comte de Noé, Toussaint occupe des fonctions de confiance – cocher et palefrenier – et bénéficie de la protection de l’homme qui gère la plantation en l’absence du propriétaire « Bayon de Libertat »

La tragédie du fils Christophe : Fernand Christophe, le fils aîné du général Henri Christophe, avait été envoyé à Paris par son père au printemps 1802 pour y poursuivre ses études, en signe de loyauté envers la France alors qu’un semblant de paix avait été signé avec le général Leclerc, après la résistance menée par Christophe aux côtés de Toussaint-Louverture durant l’hiver et le début du printemps 1802
